Life never turns out the way you plan….. It is so much harder….. but so much better!!!!!

First of all thank you to all of you who have emailed, called, come over, and face booked me. So many of you have been there for me and have noticed that I have not posted anything on my blog or face book in 2 months. We have some pretty big and scary things that have happened to us.

End of November the following occurred: There is still fluid in my stomach cavity and surrounding organs. I have 9 eggs that are about 16 cm big. A normal fertilized egg is 2cm. The ovaries are still the size of softballs; they should be size of golf balls. The pain is horrible; it feels like my intestines are being twisted. But they gave me pain meds to take the edge off. The doctor still wants me to stay in the hospital, because the risk of ovaries rupturing, and bleeding out. If the ovaries rupture and I hemorrhage they don’t even have 2 mins. to save my life. Or I have the risk of fluid filling the lungs. But I have been feeling ok at home... well the best I can feel. The doctor said I need to stay in bed and not leave the bedroom, any small bump can burst an ovary, and movement can cause the fluid to go into the lungs. We did find out the fertility treatment did not work instead this has happened.

The complications are from my doctor giving me too high of fertility drugs. It is called ovarian hyper stimulation stage 3. The worse stage. I got 3 x the normal dose. It is rare and hardly ever happens.. Because before the fluid builds up they extract eggs out. But they can't do that here. There are no doctors that can help me if my ovaries burst. My Utah fertility doctor is taking care of me now. But he said it's too dangerous to fly until I am stable. So we are praying that the Lord will take care of me. Yesterday was horrible the fluid was causing me to not breathe very well. The pain increased so much. But there is nothing they can do here. I know Heavenly Father is taking care of me and that he will not let anything bad happen to me. I just have to keep having faith. This pain is the worse pain I have ever felt, and it is the scaredest I have ever been. The ovaries are so big they are overlapping each other, and the fluid can move to the lungs if I move around too much.

Currently I am in the USA, resting and still in pain.

But i know that God has not left us, he is carrying us....and it will be over soon. Life never turns out the way you plan. It is so much harder….. but so much better. I am ok with not having children right now. I am a very blessed young lady, who has been given way more then I deserve. I really miss seeing every one. I pray that all is well with all of you. . I know so many have reached out to keep in touch with me. It means the world to me. It helps so much knowing when our family is going through such hard things... to know people will be there for us. Your prayers, kindness, calls, and comments bring such joy to my heart.

Brandon's Island Birthday

On the 21st Brandon celebrated his birthday. His wish was to have a relaxing night, with out anything related to medical school. Our wonderful friends Roger and Alicia came over and cooked dinner for us. They are so great to us. They made appetizers.. home made crepes, and wonderful shish kabobs on the grill next to the ocean. It was a so much fun to be with friends, and just enjoy each others company. Happy Birthday Brandon! I love you very much, and I am grateful to have you in my life!

Island Baby Shower

We had a baby shower for one of our dear friends, who is here with her husband for medical school. There were 5 hostesses and it was so much fun working with these amazing women. We had it at my home. Total guest 32, which is a huge turn out for the island. This mother to be, is loved by all! There was great food, the best company ever, and a hot carribean day. I love these women, they are a strength to each other, always there for anyone and ready to help out in a moments notice. Here are a few pictures form the party.

Brandon made me a AMAZING RACE Scavnager hunt around the island. With clues,questions, and pit stops... for our 7 year anniversary!

The Amazing Race, which has won 7 Emmys, 7 years in a row for best reality TV show. This is a reality TV show or game show in which teams of two, race around the world in competition with other teams. Contestants strive to arrive first at "pit stops" at the end of each leg of the race to win prizes and to avoid coming last. Contestants travel to and within multiple countries in a variety of transportation modes, including planes, taxis, rental cars, trains, buses, boats, and by foot. The clues in each leg point take the teams to

the next destination or direct them to perform a task. These challenges are related in some manner to the country or culture where they are located. Teams are progressively eliminated until three are left; at that point, the team that arrives first in the final leg is awarded a grand prize of $1 million.

At midnight on our 7^th anniversary Brandon handed me my first clue:

Brandon had big medical school exams 2 days after so he came up with this so I can have something to do on my real Anniversary. And later we will celebrate together.

This is what Brandon said when he handed me the first clue: (if you have watched the show this is how the host talks)

Brandon: Now you must pick up Alicia at 2:30pm at which time you will be given your first clue. You will have to answer a series of questions.

Hetal: Ok?

Brandon: You must not cheat or let Alicia give you hints on the any of the answers.

Hetal: In my head I am thinking of the best ways to cheat

Brandon: Once you answer the questions you will be given the next clue and you must figure out where to drive to on the island to the pit stop.. where Alicia will have an envelope of

money for you to use during that pit stops.

Hetal: Are the clues at the pit stops?

Brandon: I have hidden the clues at each stop, but given we live on the island they have probably been stolen by now. So just in case Alicia will have them with her.

Brandon: I have attached several sheets of papers to the paper Alicia will be reading from so you

don’t try to cheat and look through the paper for the answer.

Hetal: I don’t cheat!

Brandon: MMMHMM

Brandon: Good luck and Be safe! (That is what the host says when he gives them the clues) There were 8 pit stops.

Ok so we love the show Amazing Race because they travel around the world and often go to

India. Which is so much fun for me to watch, because I understand what the contestants are going through, and I understand what the locals are saying.

Here are some of the questions and clues….. Yes I did miss some of

the questions.

This was so much fun, I loved it. I felt like my husband even though very busy with medical school still puts family first and made me feel like I matter and that I am special to him. He put a lot of effort into this. Thank you Brandon, for a wonderful 7 years together and many, many more.

Hetal's 26th B-Day

I turned 26 years old! And I actually don’t feel old. I spent most of the day throwing up. No… I am not pregnant! We were planning on having people over for some cake, but given my condition we thought not to go through with that. But my dear friend made me a 3 layor chocolate cake with chocolate pudding frosting and strawberries between each layer, and around the side of the cake! And her little kids came over to bring me dinner, and they made these beautiful hand made cards.

Being 26 I am grateful for my wonderful years here on earth! My wonderful parents, brother, White parents, Patel family, White family, and my dear close friends who have always been there for me! And of course I am grateful for my loving husband who has never left my side, and who has always supported me. I am grateful for the church I belong to and the love I feel from my Heavenly Father! I am so thankful for an education, for the opportunity to live on an island (even though I complain sometimes about it), and for the opportunity to say that I am loved by many. What a blessing it is to be alive!!!

The Gieske Family is one of a kind! Daniela is a mother who is full of life! She is always excited and happy about everything. Harmen is an amazing father who shows so much love for his children and wife.

He is also the Executive Chef ( top dog) at the Sonesta Maho Beach Resort and Casino, which is one of the nicest resorts on the island of St. Maarten. I enjoyed spending the afternoon with this wonderful family. Thank you for letting me be a part of your memories.

As I am sitting here waiting for Hurricane Bill on the island. I realize how blessed I am and was when I lived in the USA. I was thinking about the home we bought last year. How grateful I am that it is still in the USA waiting for us.

There is nothing like being in our own house. I loved decorating it, and making it our own. Thank you to Chant and Kara for taking care of our home while we are gone for 2 years. I know it is in good hands. I am thankful I have a house to go back to when we leave this island, and that hurricanes are not going to harm it. So I thought I would post some pictures of our house in Missouri. Miss you house can’t wait to come back!!!

We have 3 hurricanes in the works. 2 are small, and one is freaken huge! The last hurricane to hit the island was a category 2 it changed during the night to a category 3 the islanders had no warning. The island was out of water for a month and power for a month or more. Ships sank in the Lagoon; ships came out of the ocean and landed on the airport strip behind our home. Many students homes were broken into and things were stolen. The medical school is really good at providing a safe place for the students. They have a 3 week supply of food and water for med students and their families. The students gather in class rooms that is where we will ride out the storms. There is water EVERYWHERE.

So I thought I better get prepared. We got our food storage and water storage done today. Our bags are packed, we are allowed one each. I packed up important documents: passport, papers, and birth certificates ect. All credit card and atm machines will be down. So we got our emergency fund out. Packed clothes, towels, soap, pillows, blankets, food, scriptures, and anything we may need for a month of basically camping out. I really don’t want a hurricane to hit, but all we can do is prepare... and realize it is not in our hands.

I believe the reason I am worried is cause were our home sits is the #1 target for hurricanes. The water touches the house, and the ocean is on both sides of us. I am grateful for a great support system of medical students, and family’s. I feel like we are well taken care of. Here are some pics of what is going on right now.

Here are some goals/ things I want to do and see. I plan to achieve these by Aug. 2010!!
Why am I putting this list on my blog? Because my blog is my journal/scrapbook, that I plan to print out into a book each year. And that makes it more permanent plus if I write down dates along with the goals… I have no excuse... so I better accomplish them.

I am a goal orientated person… meaning I will achieve the goal if it is written down. So here goes….

ANGUILLA’S RACE AGAINST AIDS
Learn to play all my favorite Taylor Swift songs on my guitar by Dec. 18^th 2009 I love Taylor Swift!!!

Make 18 quilts for my Patel Cousins by Dec. 23^rd.

Establish and Organize a Dental outreach community program for Children in need on the island. I have learned from my parents that once you achieve something others don’t have the opportunity to achieve it is then our turn to give back to those in need of that service. I plan on making it a biannual event that after I leave will still continue with the wonderful dentists on the Island of St. Maarten. I plan on naming it after my wonderful Parents. Date to achieve May 2010

Go zip lining Jan 2010 I am so scared of heights… but got to overcome all my fears. After we climbed this first tree, it will take around an hour before you set foot on the ground again. Before that we fly between 200-year-old mango and mahogany trees, looking down on very impressive greens. The island has one of the longest zip lines.

Go scuba diving with sharks…. Some of the medical school couples went and it looks like such an amazing experience. I know I will cry a lot though. Ha Ha Ha Date to achieve by Feb.2010 These are actual pictures of some of the med students scuba diving with sharks!

Brandon's b-day present/ Mollie update

Brandon got his Birthday present early this year! Thanks to our awesome friends Austin and Allison. They found and went to the bike shop multiple times, found the bike, put it on hold, put the necessary replacements on it, delivered the money, and picked it up for me.

I wanted to surprise Brandon.. and he was so surprised. He loves it. He got on it and rode to Austin’s house to see if he could come out and play…. Of course him and Austin are going to be biking buds. Thank you so much Austin and Allison for putting EVERYTHING together for his birthday surprise. I am so grateful for such wonderful friends in my life.

Here are a few things going on in Mollie Posh’s world…. Mollie is a character. She is so playful, still have not heard her bark yet. She loves to bring her blanket right up to where ever you are and just sit there. She is so concerned when one of us leaves the room. She will sit by the door till that person comes back into the room. Mollie loves to play fetch. She thinks she is sooo big. Mollie will pick up toys heavier then her own body weight, jump off the couch as if the tile floor won’t crack her head open. Yet she is so afraid of her own shadow. She will try to pounce on her shadow and try to kill it. Crazy girl ! She also freaks out when she sees her own reflection… she will come running to one of us crying the whole way. She is a joy to have in our family.

We got our first dog!! If you know me, you know I am very allergic to dogs. Our friends Adrienne, Ryan, Allison, and Auston helped us find a breed that does not shed, and is a smaller dog. And no allergic reactions have occurred! Yah!! Mollie Posh is named after my brother Deepash ( aka Posh) to his friends. Love ya brother. Mollie is a name I always wanted to name a pet since I was little. She is 3lbs, and the biggest she will get is 6lbs. She is 1/2 poodle, 1/2 yorki!

She is calm, loves to cuddle, loves to follow you around and just stare. She does not bark at all! We are so grateful for Adrienne and Ryan Ince, for taking care of Mollie in Texas, and getting her all ready for the island.Ryan traveled with her for 11 hours.Thank you to Allison and Austan..for preparing us for her, grooming her, answering 1 million questions, n never leaving our side! We are so grateful for such wonderful friends in our lives.

On the island the Pharmacy requires you to have a local anastasia license to give big injections. And

thankfully ..... I have a local/block anastasia license from the states ! I've given my self injections in the mouth so this should not be hard. I can do this! But freak that is the biggest thickest needle I have ever seen to go into my stomach!

Ok, I give injections with my job, but that is a BIG THICK needle going into my stomach!!!!!!!!!

I am grateful for my new medicine! And I am really excited about this ! ! !

My Great Brother!

To My Little Brother,

I thought I would write about my Brother, Deepash N. Patel (who is 16
months younger then me) who has always been there for me!

Now growing up we did not always like each other, which all siblings
close in age go through. I believe it was the age from 5-16 we did our
own thing and spent time together only when we were forced too. It’s
really not has bad as I state, but a few things about my little bother:

1. Even when we didn’t get along he cared more about me than

himself. I remember one time when I was 7 years old, I wanted to
run away, and we were staying at our grandparents. He stood in
front of the door and begged me to stay. No matter what I did to
leave – he made sure I stayed. Now I must say if it was the other
way around - I would have just started planning out what to do
with his room when he was gone. Ha Ha Ha!

2. I remember at age 8 I had the chickenpoxes and my brother with

out being asked would bring me everything I needed. Made sure
I got plenty of rest. And did not care that everyone one was
focusing on me.

3. At age 10 I was so mad at my brother for I don’t even know why

now? So I got on my four-wheeler and as he was walking across the
hotel parking lot, I pushed on the gas and hit him so hard he
flew into the bushes near by. Yes I know I was a mean sibling. He
of course cried as did I. And he didn’t even say any mean things
to me after I hit him on purpose.

4. From the age of 7-17 we practiced and practiced playing

basketball to literally get better so we could beat each other.
Those were such fun times. He was better than me, but he did not
rub it in my face.

5. When I turned 16 my brother along with my parents worked on days

to surprise me with a new car. He would spend days in the big
shed to get it cleaned out, decorated and get the car all ready
for me. I was so happy when they surprised me. I took all my
friends for a ride. But sad to say I never took my brother for a
ride. Yet he did not make a big deal of it at all. He let it go,
because he knew it was my day.

6. When I was crowned Prom Queen- my bro took pictures and seemed so

proud. Then the very next year he was Prom King. It was so great
to get a picture of us together after I crowned the new Queen. I
was so proud of him. Especially since he asked his class not to
vote for him as King.

7. From grade 8 to graduation from high school. I believe I was

president of our class 8th, 9th and 10th. And he was the same in
his own grade. And we competed in every class contest. It was
personal between us. Which class had the best decorated Christmas
tree, which class could collect the most coins, which class had
the best float and which class could decorate class doors the
best. I have to say MY class always won. But he never gave up.
Later he went on to be the President of the high school his
senior year. I was a proud sister.

8. My younger brother went off to college. Received two bachelor

degrees with honors and worked fulltime all through college. He
always made sure while I was in college that I had everything I
needed. And if I ever needed anything he would make sure to find
it, buy it, and send it to me ASAP without being asked.

9. Posh as many call him, always says funny things, and truly

believes he is our parent’s favorite.

One day he called me at college and in a very sad voice
said: “Did mom call you yet?” I said NO, is there something wrong?
He went on to say:

“Ok I will tell you, but don’t freak out. When you (Hetal) were
born, there was another woman who gave birth at the same hospital.
The other woman was Native American and also had a girl. When they
brought you (Hetal) in to mom, she thought to herself “I don’t think

this is my baby?” But since she was not too vocal and didn’t really
know what to say, she took you (Hetal) home.”

So I (Hetal) said: what are you saying? My brother said that they
found out I was not his real sister. I could not believe what was
happening. I was very much in shock! My brother said: How do you
think I feel? My real sister is somewhere on the reservation – when
she could have had all the opportunities you had. He said: “she has
probably been through so much. The real victim is my real sister.” I
said I don’t believe you Deepash. He said then call Mom.

I called my mom and said: Mom when the nurse brought me to you, did
you think I belonged to the other women who gave birth? My mother
said: Yes, I did- but I couldn’t say anything. You just didn’t look
like our child. To say the least I was in SHOCK! My mom went on to
say: she later found out I was her real daughter, and my brother was
just kidding. This is the kind of stuff my little brother loves to
pull on me, but I still love him.

Deepash has worked so hard all his life, been so charitable
towards me and others. He has always been there for me for
what ever reason. He now works as a Client Manager at American
Express, has bought his own home and still takes care of me.
He said he made a promise to God that he will take care of me
forever. So whenever he does something or gives something to me
and I say no I am fine. He says don’t make me break the promise I
have made with God. What a brother! Now that I live on an island
where it is so hard to find normal American things, I will ask
him to send things to us that we need or want. I always say I
will send him money so let me know what it costs. He always says
since I am so good looking the sales people and stores all said
it was free. (Crazy kid)

My brother is someone I look up to. Someone I want to
be like and someone I am proud of. For his humility, charity,
love, and forgiveness he gives. I admire whenever he gets a
promotion, and the very next day he starts thinking -what he
needs to do better to move up the ladder again. He works so hard.

Bro: I know you always say our parents think you are the
favorite. Even though you know I am their favorite. But I must
say I am grateful to have you as a brother.

My brother always says mom and dad wanted another child
after me (Hetal) because they wanted a better child. So mom and

I (Hetal) always say well, mom and dad always wanted a
third child, but after you (Deepash) came, my mom had her tubes
tied immediately because they could not risk a chance of having
another Deepash. And so I blame him for not having more siblings.
We of course are joking.

Experiance's at the Doctor's on the Island

Well first I must say St. Maarten is very Americanized. I get to spend a few hours at the hospital down here 2x a week. So I thought I would share some of the experiences I have had.

First I love my Doctor, he is kind, understanding, and will do what ever it takes to take care of his patients.

Well there are a few differences here on the Island VS America’s hospitals.

In the U.S. you get called back by a nurse, they take your blood pressure, and ask you if you are allergic to anything. Also you would fill out a chart with your info, health history, family history and what meds you are on. Then you will wait for the doctor to come in.

Ok, on the Island. There are no nurses to bring you back. You sit in the waiting room sometimes I wait 3 hours- even though I have an appointment. The receptionist desk is 2 feet by 2 feet. I don’t fill out any paper work except for my name, address, and phone number. No health history, no allergies, no family history.

Next I go to the doctor’s office / exam room. His desk is in the Middle of the room. On the right is an exam table, and on the other side is another exam table. The doctor asks why I came in and that is where my chart begins.

So in the U.S. when you get examined for any reason- a nurse gives you a gown, leaves the room, gives you a locker to put your clothes in. And my favorite, a warm blanket to cover you. And then the nurse knocks when you are ready for them to come in.

Ok, on the island the doctor kindly asks you to undress for what ever procedure he is doing, and he just turns around. I know I was shocked! I have had my husband or a dear friend with me each time. We don’t get a GOWN- yes I was freaken shocked! And then you get on the table and I didn’t get a warm blanket, or a freak small piece of tissue paper. Talk about not wasting money on the frills!

The first few times were way uncomfortable. But now that I go 2 x a week, it’s basically routine. Gosh when I get back to the states I will be in shock when the doctor wants my medical history, that not only do I get a gown, and I blanket – the nurse will actually leave the room.

Don’t get me wrong, I am grateful for this hospital, and very grateful for my doctor. I just wanted to share my experience.

Move to the new house

We had Brandon's parents visit us for a week. It was so nice to have family here. We had a lot of fun, we went to the island parade, many beaches, shopping, eating french pastery's, and a lot of great food. We loved having Neil and Marcia visit us on the island.

Well we moved to a new house on the beach. At first I was not too excited about having the ocean touch our house, but I love it so much now. The ocean is on front side of our house, and the back side of our house. We will see how much I love it during Hurricaine season. Here are a few pictures off our balcony from the living room.

My Niece Gentry is Graduating High School with Honors this year, She has been offered multiple full ride scholarships. Gentry took Academic ALL-STATE, she is a sterling scholar, and Gentry is drill team captain. I am so proud of you Gentry!

My Niece Heather graduated high school with her Associates degree from Utah State University. Heather also received multiple full ride scholarships, Heather has been away to college for almost a year. She is excelling and she is on the college ballroom dance team. I am so proud of you Heather!

Heather and Matt are so cute together. Matt is currently serving a two year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. We approve of Matt! ha ha ha
